Orlando has many schools offering all levels of law, criminal justice and paralegal education. Florida Metropolitan University focuses on practical training and offers criminal justice degrees as well as preparation for a paralegal career. Other schools offering degrees and certification for paralegals and other criminal justice fields include Valencia College, Mid-Florida Tech, and Florida Southern. Herzing College offers bachelor's degrees in homeland security and public safety and associate's degrees for paralegals.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 7,500 people were employed in legal professions in the Orlando area in November 2004, including about 4,000 lawyers and 1,900 paralegal jobs. Almost 25,000 people were employed in protective service jobs, with about 4,000 employed as law enforcement officers and 8,800 as security guards. In the state of Florida, the rate of growth for jobs for lawyers is 2.11%, and the rate of growth for paralegal jobs is 3.18%. Jobs for police and sheriff's patrol officers are growing at a rate of 2.54%.
